Our weekly round-up of the weird and wonderful world of pop music...

Yeah, yeah, you’ve only just recovered from the 2007 awards ceremonies, but what the hell – nothing’s going to beat this to the coveted Most Backhanded Compliment of 2008 prize. Here’s Onerepublic’s Ryan Tedder talking about the fragrant Rihanna: “She’s the new Britney Spears”. He actually meant it in a nice way. Seriously.

Plenty more splendid quotes this week, kicking off with US octave-jumper Mariah Carey: “I understand that people think I am a ditzy moron.” That’s great, Mariah - finally something we can all agree on. Meanwhile, Ronan Keating managed to shake off the last vestiges of respect we had for him: “A lot of people felt I was the reason Boyzone broke up, but it was the five of us”. We preferred it when we thought you’d ruined the lives of those useless bozos, Ronan.

Coldplay’s Chris Martin has broken his five-minute silence to announce the title of their new album, Viva La Vida. He seems to expect poison-penned hacks to take the mick, perhaps incorporating puerile comparisons with his brother* Ricky’s cheesefest ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’. “Well, f*** you,” Chris says, “That’s what it’s called and I’ll be proved to be right eventually.” You’ll be “proved right” that it’s the title? You mean, when you slap it on the cover yourself? This isn’t a fair bet.

One last bigmouth of the week is party-frocked mockney sixth form poet Kate Nash (bless her), who has been defending her triumph over Leona Lewis in the British Female category at the Brits. “Leona seems like a really nice girl, but I think it was really good I won it because I started this myself.” Quite so. “I’m not a manufactured pop artist,” added former Brit School pupil Kate.

*Ok, this is possibly poetic licence.
